benthic008 - Asymptote, "Variforms"

Asymptote is the brainchild of David Flick and Matt Robison. On 2007's astonishing "Parapolitix" (available here), they skillfully combined massive beats with glitchy melodies. 2010 brings "Variforms", perhaps a more introspective offering, predicated on the recording technique the duo used: live with little to no overdubs, edits or additional manipulations. Despite (or because of) the minimal production, Variforms sounds lush and varied, less a dance-oriented than a mind-oriented album. Enjoy!

benthic007 - Ajnamoret: "Grimgribber EP"

Benthic Level Recordings is pleased to announce our release of the new EP by Ajnamoret. This artist, currently ensconced in Savannah, GA, has provided us with "Grimgribber", an exploration of what is possible when acoustic instrumentation meets electronic manipulation. Pulsing drones, and soaring wavefronts of sound, crash on the shore of the eardrum in this meditation on sonic manipulation.

benthic006 - Somnaphon: "Llanquihue remixes" (various artists)

Benthic Level Recordings presents a very special release, featuring some of the best electronic artists from the Wilmington, NC area. "Llanquihue" is the closing track from Wilmington artist Somnaphon's release "Fire Mind Wisdom" (available in hard copy here and mp3 format here). In Somnaphon's words, "The original version of Llanquihue was constructed as a sort of rorschach test for the spirit, created after a period of psychic and spiritual dismemberment... the intent in creating this remix album was to extend such energies/notions to fellow artists in order to gain and/or document their perspectives." These artists include authorless, Carl Kruger, one lifeless eye, Mr. Stonecipher, and subterrene, and in our opinion, the result is a brilliant experimental/ambient blend that doesn't sound quite like anything else.

benthic005 - The Dream Surgeons: "Semotus Universitas"

The 2nd release from Savannah, GA based artist David E. Flick, Semotus Universitas is an ambient/drone piece that clocks in at just over 40BPM. Textures flow over one another... hints of rhythm creeping in and out at various moments... this release sheds the abrasiveness of Megladon and trades it in for the use of softer sounds that are meant to let you escape into your imagination.

benthic004 - atsense/subterrene: "Topeka"

Benthic Level Recordings is proud to offer "Topeka", a split single presented by atsense and subterrene. atsense is a powerful jazzcore ensemble from Japan, who weld experimental rhythm structures to raw guitar chords with a melodic sensibility; here, they offer "leaving don't leave", a moodily atmospheric seven-minute jam. subterrene in turn offers "the empty quarter", a construction of intensely manipulated guitar haunted by a disembodied flute. A good listen for contemplative moments...

benthic003 - Donovan Quixote, "Busy Fleas"

Busy Fleas is presented to Benthic Level by Donovan Quixote. A satire of scene-ism stemming from Karl Marx's opinions of the elitist bourgeois, Busy Fleas plays out its class struggle pitting feline against female in an international showdown between the almighty Pussies. Quixote recklessly employs stolen field recordings both directly and abstactly to create Cubist ether-worlds disconnected from logic but refined in theme. With sandpaper tongue firmly in flushed cheek, entendres collide and misogyny abounds until that ecstatic moment when the scratched itch transcends from radiant irritation to absolute bliss, erasing want and worry. Part beat science, part sonic seduction, Busy Fleas draws its claws for a truly epic catfight.

feat. "Vermisst (remix for Tessless)" and "Put to Sleep"
